Karen Strackeljahn Joins the Scott Rice Design Team!

Welcome Karen Strackeljahn to the team!  Karen has joined the organization as a healthcare designer. We’re excited to have her on the team! Here’s a little bit about her.

I recently relocated from Columbia, MO to Kansas City looking for a new adventure and to grow and advance in my career.  I worked at furniture dealer in Columbia for seven years and have gotten to know the commercial office furniture industry well.  I moved from St. Louis, where I am originally from and had been working in residential furniture.  I have lived in Columbia twice now, non-consecutively.  The first time was for four years in college and the second time was for six years for my most recent job prior to coming to work at Scott Rice.  I attended the University of Missouri – Columbia and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Architectural Studies.  Prior to that I attended St. Louis Community College and earned an Associate’s Degree in Fine Art.

I am an artist and currently a painter working in acrylic.  However over the years I have explored, dabbled in, and used a broad range of medium.  I enjoy going to art shows, galleries, museums, events and workshops, and connecting with other artists.  I recently had a painting of mine in a show in March at the Columbia Art League in Columbia, MO.  The theme of the show was tiny things, in which the artwork had to be small in size.  My painting is of a bonsai plant, called a money tree, and is only 8” x 8”.  It was a lot of fun to create and I had to use very tiny brushes!

I enjoy spending time outdoors walking, hiking, biking, camping, and floating.  One of my favorite places to go and hike is Rock Bridge State Park, in particular the Devil’s Ice Box trail and natural rock bridge that has formed in the park over many many years!  My hiking friends and I go out in winter in the snow and freezing cold temperatures to catch a glimpse of the park in one of its most beautiful states.  Also it’s extra fun and exciting!  In my free time I also enjoy trying new restaurants, cooking, reading, documentary films, symphony/orchestra concerts, cultural/community events, and spending time with friends and family.

I love to travel, explore new places and have an ever growing list of places that I want to see.  One of the neatest places that I have ever been is the Dry Tortugas National Park, a very unique little slip of rustic paradise in the Caribbean.  I hope to get back someday to camp there.  A very close second favorite of mine is Barcelona.  I spent two weeks in Spain on a class trip while in college traveling around looking at architecture.  A recent favorite spot that my parents and I discovered is a lavender farm out in Wright City, MO.  In addition to rows of lavender they have a very cute boutique shop with all things lavender, café, and neat property grounds with lots of flowers!  I am looking forward to exploring my new home here in Kansas City, finding new favorite spots, and starting a new chapter in my career with Scott Rice!
