Women in Design – Kansas City held their 10 year celebration last Thursday, June 25th.

Several of our Scott Rice Office Works employees are involved in this organization that is a sub-committee of the American Institute of Architects – Kansas City. We sold around 140 tickets and were overwhelmed with the amount of people that came out to celebrate.

We welcomed Sheila Kennedy, FAIA to give a presentation on design practice and her work which included integration of solar panels into textiles in Brazil, passive designed smart living units in Germany, and innovative use of brick corbelling techniques in Boston.  Her insight and innovation was inspiring and thought provoking.

At the event we also release our RISE journal. Creating a publication was a 10 year goal for the organization and it was accomplished with the wonderful efforts of a committee of fairly new members that took on finding authors and publishing a beautiful journal. We are offering printed copies of this through the RISE committee and will also be offering a digital version. Contact RISE@widkc.org for more information.

Upon conclusion of this event we are thrilled to announce that we have raised the necessary funds to endow our $1,500 yearly scholarship through the Kansas City Architectural Foundation.  We would however hope to encourage additional support to increase that amount to $2,000 annually and only need an additional $3,000 to make this happen! We are working diligently on this and hope to accomplish it very soon!

We would like to thank our wonderful sponsors for making this event an extreme success:

Elevate Level: Wellner Architects
Advocate Level: SFS Architecture & BNIM
Support Level: Thornton Tomasetti, Treanor Architects, Centric Projects, JeDunn, Burns&McDonnell, Helix & Gastinger Walker Harden – Bee Triplett Buck

And another special thanks to encompas for having us at their lovely space, to Drexel Technologies for printing our Women in Architecture & WiD-KC Timelines, and the AIA for their support and coordination efforts.
